Live craps

Live dealer casino is a perfect way to enjoy the casino atmosphere from your own home and many of the top New Zealand online casinos are offering these games to their members right now.

The craps live dealer game is relatively new in terms of the live casino experience and it offers a mixture of the online and offline gaming atmosphere.

You would first question how the dice are thrown and the answer is often by a computerised arm on the table that mimics a player’s arm.

The game is then played out as you expect and you can still play as the shooter, this is decided if you bet before the timer limit runs out for the next roll.

Types of craps games

Craps experts have managed to create multiple versions of the game over the years, but we’ll stick to the traditional game and the most popular craps tables found at online casinos.

Read on as we take a look at the top craps online real money games:

  • Bank Craps

The traditional craps game is available online and offline with the typical betting options where all bets are made against the house before the dice are rolled. This is the game that we have based our guide and betting tips on, so read on to find out how to make the most of this particular craps game.

  • Simplified Craps

It does exactly what you expect and offers a simplified version of the rules. Only one roll is given to the player and you win if the total is 2, 3, 4, 10, 11 or 12. You lose if the total is 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9. The game then repeats and so as you can expect, simplified craps is a fast-paced game.

  • Low/High Limit Craps

You can often find craps tables that are defined in terms of betting limits, and so this will suit those with smaller or larger bankrolls than normal. Playing low or high-limit craps will allow you to make the most of your experience and keep your betting stakes close to your comfort zone.

  • High Point Craps

High Point craps is another simplified version of bank craps. If the player rolls the dice and a 2 or 3 shows up, the roll is ignored and the player gets to roll again. If they roll an 11 or 12 then they automatically win. All other numbers will establish the Point number as usual and the game continues as you would expect. The house edge is a little worse off in high-point craps though, so always try to stick to the bank craps game wherever possible.

Types of bets

Below you can find the typical bets available to you on a craps table along with the related craps table odds as well:

Bet NameCraps Odds
Pass/Come Bet1:1
Don’t Pass/Don’t Come1:1
Pass Odds/Come Odds2:1 on 4,10.
3:2 on 5,9.
6:5 on 6,8.
Don’t Pass Odds / Don’t Come Odds1:2 against 4,10.
2:3 against 5,9.
5:6 against 6,8.
Field1:1 on 3,4,9,10,11.
2:1 on 2,12.
Place 6 / Place 87:6

Craps strategies

  • Stay clear of the Big 6 or 8

If you do bet on the 6 or 8 then only ever go for the Place 6 or 8, don’t let the casino have the 9% edge.

  • The 3-Point Molly

Protect your pass-line bets by letting three numbers work for you and balance out your overall bet.

  • Stick with pass-line bets

The most common type of bet used by craps players comes with a respectable house edge of 1.41%.

  • Stay clear of proposition bets –

These bets come with high house edge percentages, so remember to stay clear of them.

Expert craps playing tips

Betpal mascot throwing dice

On a craps table, there is a side bet available called the Odds bet and this becomes available after the Point number is thrown.

In simple terms, it pays out if the Point is thrown before the seven. The reason that we have mentioned this bet is because it comes with a 0% house edge, and so actually works out as one of the best bets in the casino.

You do need to make a Pass Line before you can make an Odds bet, so it’s not completely free of house edge overall but it does offer enticing odds for the keen craps player.

Craps dice game rules

Our first point to make for beginners is that the game of craps is far less confusing than you might first think.

The table itself might look complex but the game rules are surprisingly simple once you understand what is going on.

craps casino table

The table is mirrored down the centre and this allows players to be able to place bets from both ends in a real casino situation.

You can just imagine what a roulette table would look like with a mirrored version and twice the number of betting options. This would also be overwhelming to a beginner, but now we know that we can forget half of those bets straight away. Now, we’ll look at a simplified version of the betting process for a typical craps game.

Craps betting process

  • Players start by placing chips in the Pass Line area.
  • The Pass phase then starts with the Come out roll and the player rolls the dice.
  • All Pass bettors will then win if the roll is a 7 or 11, or lose if the roll is 2, 3 or 12.
  • Any other number will then become the Point number.
  • If the player rolls a Point number on the Come out roll, he will then need to keep on rolling until either of the following occurs: he rolls the same Point number again to win or 7 results in a loss.
  • If the player makes the Point Number then he will continue with a new Comeout roll. In an offline game, if they roll a 7 then the dice are thrown by the next player.

Playing Craps – Online vs Offline

It doesn’t take a genius to realise playing online will be a much quieter experience than playing at your local brick-and-mortar casino, but whether or not that is an advantage to you, there are many other benefits to playing this craps game online:

Quick Play: Online craps is a lot faster and give you a lot more control when playing in terms of all the betting options, sounds, and animations. Many of the games give you the option to play in turbo mode although we do advise against this, it’s best to enjoy the experience and take your time.

Minimal Bets: Online craps give you a much wider range of stake limits so this makes it easier to play at a table suited to your budget. This way you can keep track of your playing and not be forced into making bets you are uncomfortable with.

Relaxing Environment: Many beginners are intimidated by the real craps table at a casino and so playing online gives those players somewhere to understand the game. You can relax, take your time, and not worry about other people.

Waiting Time: Again, playing online puts you in full control and this means that you can decide when to play. You often have to wait to play at brick-and-mortar casinos but online you pick and choose when you play, which can be at any time of the day.
