The online gambling commissions around Europe and beyond are a vital ingredient in the business operations of any online casino. All online gambling sites require a gambling license and these are only available through an official gambling authority.

A gambling license should be one of the first checks that online players look for when signing up to an online casino. Trust, fair gaming and data protection all fall under a gambling license and without one, casinos should not be trusted.

Typically, the casino will apply for a license through their local jurisdiction but as they grow, they will also apply for other licenses to attract customers from further afield. Applying for a gambling license is not an easy process and there are strict guidelines to follow and all boxes must be ticked to be accepted.

As licensing and regulations become stricter, one or two gambling commission authorities come with a higher level of respect and trust than others. The UKGC, the MGC and GGC are three of the most respected in this day and age, and we’ll be looking at these in more detail below:

United Kingdom Gambling Commission- UKGC

The UKGC started to officially regulate the online gambling market in 2014 after many years of regulating the offline gambling market. The extensive experience and long history are two reasons why the UKGC is such a respected and trusted licenser provider in the iGaming industry.

Over the last few years, it has become increasingly difficult for UK casinos to get accepted due to stricter rules coming through from the UK government. There are now less casinos to play because of this but at least customers know that their money and data is safe and secure.

Strong links with independent game regulators such as eCogra also ensure that all games are fair and random at UK licensed casinos. It might be a long journey for casinos to get licensed with the UKGC, but at least it puts the casino amongst the top names in the industry if they do get accepted.

Malta Gaming Commission – MGC

Malta is an iGaming hub and many online casino and gaming operations have been set up since the turn of the millennium. The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) was rebranded from the Malta Lottery and Gaming Authority (LGA) in early 2015 and they currently hold a lot of power within the online casino industry.

The MGC is one of the most respected gambling authorities in Europe and on the global scene as well for that matter. In fact, the MGC is widely considered to be the leading regulator for the wider online casino landscape and so the standards that they set are followed by many other smaller gambling jurisdictions.

Gibraltar – GGC

Gibraltar is another European iGaming hotspot located off the southern coast of Spain. The Gibraltar Gambling Commission (GGC) based on the peninsula is a widely respected license provider that is well-known for taking a strict stance on fair gaming, data protection, and general casino good-practice. Being known as one of the hardest regulatory authorities in the world might be frustrating for casinos, but at least as a paying customer, you know that a GGC licensed casino can be trusted.
