solheim cup 2019

The Solheim Cup is to Women’s Golf what the Ryder Cup is to Men’s Golf: The biggest competition around. Held every two years, it features the best European players competing against the elite of American golf.

The American team has won the last two Solheim Cups, and five of the last seven. The pressure is therefore on the Europeans, who will face off on home soil at one of the most iconic golf courses in the world, the Gleneagles in Scotland.

Competition Overview

As always the Solheim Cup is a three-day match play event, where a victory in each match is awarded with 1 point. If a match ends in a draw (or A/S as the golf-terminology goes), half a point will be awarded to both teams.

There will be played a total of eight foursomes, eight fourballs and twelve singles over the three days, meaning that 14 1/2 point for either team will secure victory in the Solheim Cup. If the competition should bring about an overall draw (14 points for each side), the defending champion (in this case the USA) will retain the cup.

  • Day 1 (Friday): 4 Foursomes, 4 Fourballs.
  • Day 2 (Saturday): 4 Foursomes, 4 Fourballs.
  • Day 3 (Sunday): 12 Singles.

Lexi Thompson the Star for the US, Ciganda Could Shine for Team Europe

Women’s golf at the highest level has long been dominated by Koreans, but there are nevertheless a number of stars present on the American team.

One is Lexi Thompson, the current world number 3, highlighted by many as the most prolific player on Team USA.

Another one is Nelly Korda, the 21-year old breakthrough star of the season who has won two PGA Tour tournaments the past twelve months, and came an impressive 3rd at this summer’s PGA Championship. Thompson is predicted to be the top point scorer on Team USA, with Royal Panda offering 9/2 if that happens. If Korda was to score the most points for Team USA, Royal Panda leads the market with 11/2.

Carlota Ciganda – Team Europe’s Predicted Top Scorer

On the European side, much responsibility rests on the shoulders of Carlota Ciganda, the only European player in the Top 20 in the World Rankings. Although Ciganda has failed to win a tournament this year, she has still enjoyed a solid season with tree Top 10 finishes in majors.

She goes into the Solheim Cup as Team Europe’s predicted top scorer, a scenario that Bet365 ranks at 5/1. Ciganda suffered some terrible defeats during the 2017 Solheim Cup, so she will look to avenge herself here.

Team USA the Definite Favourites, but Europe Could Challenge

Team USA are the definite favourites for this one with Team Europe currently given around a 35% chance to win by the bookmakers (7/4 with William Hill).

Yet both Solheim Cups and Ryder Cups have been the scene of major upsets before, and last year Team Europe upset the United States in the Ryder Cup, even after a very poor opening round.

There is all to play for at Gleneagles – but with Team USA priced at 8/15 (William Hill), Europe will have to do it as the underdogs once again.
