It’s that time of year again when the eyes of all tennis fans turn towards the unofficial ‘world cup of tennis’ – the Davis Cup.  This year’s tournament sees a total of 18 countries participating in the Finals.

The teams are divided into 6 different groups A through to F, and there are three teams in each group. The top spot in each group qualifies for the knockout stage plus the best two runners up.

Top 5 Teams to Win It

Spain

If they can battle their way out of the ‘group of death’ – Group B – then Spain stands every chance of lifting the trophy on home soil. Once their group matches against a much-fancied Russian team have been played we should have a much clearer idea of which of them could reach the final.

With players like Rafael Nadal, Bautista-Agut, and Pablo Carreno-Busta who would bet against such a formidable force. Factor in the home crowd advantage and it’s easy to see why they are currently the bookie’s favourites to go all the way in Madrid.

France

The French team are going to have a true fight on their hands against a plucky Serbian side in their quest to top Group A. They’ll be hoping that their impressive team sheet, including the likes of Monfils, Benoit Paire and Tsonga will be enough to see them through to the final.

They are odds on favourites to overcome the Serbs in a tight group and progress right through to the final. Of course, there’s a lot of tennis to play between now and the 24th of November but they are currently second-favourites to lift the cup.

Australia

With a strong lineup feating Nick Kyrgios, John Millman and Alex De Minaur, Australia are expected to top their group without too many problems. Fellow group teams, Belgium and Columbia, only have one player inside the top 50 rankings between them and are expected to provide some easy opposition.

Whether the Aussies have enough in the locker to carry them right through to the final is another matter. They currently sit as third favourites to triumph in Madrid.

Current Best Odds for Australia to Win:

Bet365: 8/1

Serbia

Being placed in Group A alongside a much-fancied French team is certain to make like difficult for the Serbs. However, only a fool would discount a team containing the current world number one, Novak Djokovic. Throw into the mix Dusan Lajovic and Filip Krajinovic and suddenly things are looking rather promising.

Even if they don’t top Group A, Serbia is surely looking at going through to the knockout stage as the strongest runners up form all the groups.

Current Best Odds for Serbia to Win:

Bet365: 7/1

Russia

Despite not being favourites to lift the trophy, great things are expected of this Russian side. This mainly down to the impressive current form of players like Medvedev, Khachanov and Andrey Rublev.

Having them in Group B alongside tournament favourites Spain and Croatia make it a very tough one to call indeed. Going on the bookie’s odds alone, it would be safe to say that they will make the knockout stages but that’s where the party will end for them.

Current Best Odds for Russia to Win:

PaddyPower: 10/1
