The winner will be announced on Monday, December 16.

2019 UEFA Golden Boy overview

The 17th edition of the Golden Boy awards list has been narrowing from the initial 100 players. The annual award is given to the best young player under the age of 21 in Europe’s top tier leagues.

The award was created by Italian newspaper Tuttorsport in 2003 and has been previously awarded to the likes of Wayne Rooney, Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, and Kylian Mbappe. Winners will be voted for by a jury of sports journalists from 11 newspapers across Europe in December.
Matthijs De Ligt beat off stiff competition from Kylian Mbappe and Justin Kluivert to become the first defender to clinch the award in 2018. He is still in contention this year, making the 40-man shortlist and could be the first player to retain the crown. He will be battling it out with several stellar names who have enjoyed breakthrough seasons across Europe.

Top Five Favourites

1. Joao Felix

The Portuguese sensation touted as Cristiano Ronaldo’s hair is the current favorite to win the award. The 20-year-old burst to the scenes for Benfica last year, displaying incredible skills and form to score 18 goals in 33 matches in 2018-19 for the club. He earned his first national team call-up in the Nations League win over Switzerland this June and made a lucrative £113 million move to Atletico Madrid over the summer.

2. Jadon Sancho

The 19-year-old English international is undoubtedly another wunderkind in the reckoning and second favorite. The Borussia Dortmund starlet had an incredible season in the Bundesliga, where he took the league by storm after his move from Manchester City. His unbelievable vision and breathtaking all-rounded technicality is a sight to behold and reason Europe’s elite clubs covet the Englishman.

3. Matthijs De Ligt

The 20-year-old Dutch center back made a £67.8 million move to Juventus in the summer and will be looking to establish and cement his place amongst the best defenders in the game. The 2018 award winner had an incredible season with Ajax – that saw him captain the Amsterdam-based side to the champions league semi-finals, and is looking to retain the award and become the first player to win it twice.

4. Vinicius Junior

A £40 million move to Real Madrid for a young relatively unknown player raised a lot of eyebrows. The Brazilian has answered and proved doubters wrong with his first season at the Bernabeu, contributing to 15 goals in all competitions in a rather disastrous season for the Spanish giants. The 18-year-old forward has continuously impressed and featured as a frontrunner in the race for the Golden Boy awards.

5. Phil Foden

The 19-year-old Englishman has slowly begun featuring in Pep Guardiola’s plans even after struggling to get game time at the beginning of last season when he more often featured in the Carabao Cup. The midfielder is prominently featuring in the squad this season and with his club’s dominance, Foden will look to make a bigger impact for the Citizens and become an indispensable starter.
