The final tournament of the WTA calendar – the Fed Cup aside, of course – is going to take place in Sofia over the next couple of days and what a tournament it should be! It probably won’t be as exciting as the tournament in Singapore that we saw last week, but the quality of tennis should nonetheless be very high and we’re going to see some of the very best players in action, so what’s not to be liked?

Eight players will enter the draw in two groups and there will be play-offs consisting of four players over the weekend, so, if you’re looking for an outright bet, it’s probably best to pick someone who is consistent enough to get the necessary points in the group stages. Dominika Cibulkova and Tsvetana Pironkova can therefore be put aside in our opinion, while Andrea Petkovic and Alize Cornet look really risky to say the least. That leaves us with four players – Makarova, Muguruza Blanco, Pennetta, and Suarez-Navarro.

Carla Suarez-Navarro and Garbine Muguruza Blanco were in action in the doubles last week, so that is a certain downside to their chances, which leaves us with two players – and, from those, we’re going to prefer the Italian, Flavia Pennetta. The world’s number fifteen hasn’t had the best of seasons, but she’s always well-prepared for the big events and the Sofia conditions should suit her playing style, so she could make it through to the finals with a little bit of luck. She doesn’t have the same problems the other players seem to have and that is a big plus with regard to her chances given that this is the end of the season and that many players are going to be tired, so we like the look of her at 6.00.
