England to win at 8/11 Coral

Gary Ballance: Top England run-scorer 9/2 Coral

England’s win in Grenada was especially creditable as it was such a disappointing pitch for Test cricket, slow and low and not at all condusive to attractive cricket. The strength of the batting line up in the middle order, especially in the form of Root and Ballance set up the opportunity and then Anderson produced one session that turned the game. From 202/2 overnight the West Indies subsided to 307 all out on the fifth day morning.

For the West Indies there continue to be isolated signs of improvement in individual performances but man for man they lack the cohesiveness and talent of their opposition and understandably remain underdogs for the third Test starting in Barbados on Friday.

Barbados is a far more established Test venue than Grenada and first signs of the pitch are that it is set for batting. It is to be hoped that it has some pace. For England not all is rosy. Trott’s form is a concern and on flat pitches the absence of a match winning spinner will be a worry against better opposition than this. The West Indies may be missing Holder through injury and badly missed Taylor in Grenada

England are once again 8/11 outright to win this Test, with the Draw 9/4 and West Indies 6/1. The weather forecast for Bridgetown, Barbados is cloudy with a small chance of showers over the first three days, which will clear out by the fourth day. We shouldn’t however, see any significant loss of play due to rain. A draw is unlikely, and England should again confirm their superiority

Alastair Cook finally found some form last game, when he scored a fifty in the 1st innings, followed by an unbeaten fifty in the 2nd innings. He is now joint favourite to top score for England at 4-1 along with Ian Bell. This is interesting because the two most prolific batsmen in the series, Garry Ballance and Joe Root are priced up at 9/2 and it doesn’t look particularly logical that they should be at higher prices. Ballance bats above Root, and is probably the value of the four
