Viktor Troicki, the world’s number twenty-four, has been playing superb tennis in recent days and weeks. Is he going to continue that good run in Nottingham this week?

Some will surely suggest that it’s high time for some rest considering that the third Grand Slam of the season is just around the corner, but we suppose that Troicki wouldn’t have even gone to Nottingham if that was his plan. After all, he’s played enough tennis for practice and he’s also gained a lot of ranking points recently, so he would certainly feel confident to skip this tournament if he wanted to do that.

He hasn’t, however, and he’s been drawn against a very reasonable opponent in the form of Sergiy Stakhovsky, who’s already played a match in this event, beating Steve Johnson in straight sets. That was a good victory, but one that probably say more about Johnson not performing than about the Ukrainian getting momentum, so we believe that it should be taken with a grain of salt.

The bad news for Stakhovsky is not only that he’s going to play against an in-form opponent, but also that he currently has a very poor 1-5 record against Troicki, having beaten him just once, way back in 2008 when they met for the first time. Since then, Troicki has won five in a row and there’s nothing that would suggest that this streak is going to get broken this week, so we’re going to recommend a bet on the Serb in the second round of the tournament in Nottingham. The upcoming Grand Slam simply doesn’t play a role in our opinion, especially since there’s virtually no traveling to be worried about either.
