The defending champion, Roger Federer, will surely be the biggest star of the first day of this year’s Wimbledon, but his opponent, Victor Hanescu, could provide him with a fairly decent test.

The bookmakers apparently believe that the defending champion is simply going to stroll through to the next round and there is no doubt that it would be a major shock to see Federer struggling against someone like Victor Hanescu after well enough to capture the title in Halle, but the lines that are being offered for that match nevertheless look a bit strange in a few regards.

After all, what would need to happen in order for Roger Federer to cover all those lines against the Romanian? Well, first of all, he would need to hold his serve with virtual perfection. That is very likely to happen, but it is certainly not a complete certainty these days. Secondly, he would also need to break Hanescu with some degree of regularity – and that is something that is actually not very likely to happen, as Hanescu is a fairly strong player on his serve and also one that is able to put every single bit of his energy into a match like this.

There is obviously every chance that Federer will produce a few strokes of genius in a set or two, but it wouldn’t take more than one tight set for the overs to be covered here. If Federer starts a bit slowly, that is going to happen – and there is every chance that it is going to happen even if he doesn’t, as Hanescu isn’t a player that would give any cheap games away, no matter who might be on the other side of the net.
