The ATP event in Stuttgart has already seen the departure of Tommy Haas, so the German hopes will now rest on the shoulders of the world’s number twenty-five, Philipp Kohlschreiber.

The experienced local hero will certainly love to be in this kind of situation, as it seems that he has a fairly easy route to the title in Stuttgart, but the reality often turns out to be fairly different from the expectations and his match against Victor Hanescu could actually see quite a few twists and turns on Saturday.

Even though the Romanian may not look like a very dangerous opponent at first glance, don’t be fooled by that appearance – he is a very competent player that also seems to have timed his form exactly right for this tournament. To beat the likes of Dmitry Tursunov, Thomaz Bellucci, and Benoit Paire (who has definitely been on a rise in recent weeks and months) is no easy task, but he has managed to push them all aside and one should expect him to go well against Kohlschreiber as well, especially since the conditions are apparently exactly up his alley (and yes, he has also beaten him on two previous occasions).

One thing is certain – we are going to see a very tough contest on Saturday and its result might be a bit different from the expectations. Our recommendation is to back the world’s number fifty-one to win it, as the odds seem to be stacked quite heavily to one side of the contest for no real reason. Kohlschreiber might be the slightly classier player of the two, but to rely on him to win this one easily would be very wrong.
