The first round pairings could not have been more interesting, but most of them carry risks so substantial that we simply cannot recommend backing any of the players. Instead, we are going to look at one of the seemingly less interesting matches, the match between Vasek Pospisil and Yen-hsun Lu.

The two players have last met two weeks ago in Atlanta, where the Canadian prevailed in three difficult sets. The match also had one very strange moment, as Pospisil injured himself during the third set only to start producing some of his best tennis and eventually winning against his confused opponent that simply could not believe what was going on. The live odds were fluctuating from one side to another, but Lu was getting nowhere with his solid brand of tennis, while Pospisil was winning the crucial points with extravagant shots.

The scenery now changes to Canada, the home country of Vasek Pospisil, and we therefore think that shrewd punters should consider backing the Canadian to beat Yen-hsun Lu once again. Lu has already played a few matches in Montreal and that could give him a slight advantage in that regard, but Pospisil should not mind, as he was playing very good tennis in Washington last week, although he could not get past the eventual runner-up, John Isner. To compare Lu with Isner would be rather hard, as Lu simply is not the player he once was anymore, so we recommend backing the world’s number forty-five in the first round in Montreal.
