One of the early WTA matches – namely, the one between the world’s number twenty, Varvara Lepchenko, and the world’s number forty-seven, Elena Vesnina – might easily bring an upset to kick things off over in Melbourne on Thursday.

The WTA action has been very exciting so far and that trend seems set to continue on Thursday, which will see some of the game’s biggest stars, including Petra Kvitova, Caroline Wozniacki, and Viktoria Azarenka, in action. The bet that has caught my eye the most, however, comes from one of the early matches. Namely, from the match that will see Varvara Lepchenko fighting against Elena Vesnina.

On one hand, it is true that the Russian is coming into this match on the back of a stunning run of results that includes a tournament victory in Hobart. On the other hand, that run must have also taken plenty of energy out of her and the fact that she was struggling in her first round encounter with Caroline Garcia is a good evidence of that.

Meanwhile, Varvara Lepchenko hasn’t done anything before the Grand Slam, but she has started her Melbourne campaign with a nice victory against Polona Hercog and I expect her to build on that performance today. The America has made a lot of progress in recent months and I would actually rate her slightly above Vesnina in terms of overall quality, so I am quite surprised by seeing that she is such a big underdog in this match-up. Form is important in tennis, but Vesnina looks a bit overrated to me and I think that going against her might be worth it right now, especially at the prices that are on offer.
