With his victory in Japan, Hamilton moved 67 points clear in the Drivers championship standings with four races togo and can win the title this weekend

Hamilton’s facile win, qualifying on pole and leading start to finish was made easy by a tactical mistake by Ferrari in mixed qualifying cnditions and then yet another mistake by Vettel in the race, Hamilton has taken 168 of 175 points in the last 7 races to take control of the 2018 title race

The portents for him in Austin next weekend are good too. Hamilton has won five of the six races at the venue including the last four in a row for Mercedes. Sweeping corners an long straights suit power and Mercedes have had the strongest package in each of the last two regulation periods.

This year Ferrari have caught up with Mercedes but the mistakes have most likely cost them their chance of fighting for titles. Of course Hamilton’s great form, supremacy at the venue and prospects mean he is a strong favourite here.

He is 8/15 in the winner market with Vettel 3/1 and Bottas 7/1, 12/1 bar. Whilst Hamilton should win the value is likely to be Bottas each way (two places, one third the odds). Firstly a top two finish is likely and secondly if Hamilton’s run of reliability does change he will be there to pick up the pieces. Of course until the championship outcome is settled team orders as we saw in Sochi are the downside.
