The 18th season of the Ultimate Fighting Championships’ reality TV series “The Ultimate Fighter” draws to a close with its Finale on Saturday the 30th of November. The Ultimate Fighter 18 was the first season to feature female contestants with two separate tournaments ongoing throughout the season, bantamweight tournaments for both sexes. The event is headlined by a match-up between Gray Maynard and Nate Diaz who compete for the third time (one was an exhibition fight at an early Ultimate Fighter season) and we are treated to the two tournament finals. The best of our free UFC tips for the events comes in the men’s final where the underdog seems to be undervalued by the bookmakers and looks an interesting price at 9/5 with bet365.
Chris Holdsworth was a standout contestant on the 18th season of The Ultimate Fighter winning all 3 of his fights by first round submission en route to the final. The Team Alpha Male-trained BJJ black belt goes into the final against England’s Davey Grant as perhaps a warranted favourite.
Grant also looked impressive during the show, showing a good mix of striking and grappling skills before being denied the opportunity to demonstrate his skills once more when his semi-final opponent failed to make weight.
Not something British fighters are especially renowned for, Grant has an impressive submissison game himself with 7 of his 8 career wins coming via submission and both his victories on the show coming via the same method.
However, that is an area of this fight Grant will likely be trying to avoid with Holdsworth a very dangerous ground fighter who transitions very quickly and effectively. Therefore it is key that Davey Grant continues to show solid takedown defence and I believe he can avoid Holdsworth’s takedowns with the American not a top level wrestler.
On the feet it should be relatively level with a slight edge to Grant who looks to be able to mix it up more. Holdsworth will look to work off his jab but I fancy Grant to work his way round that offence and mount his own.
The fight should certainly be a close one and, whilst Holdsworth perhaps has a slight edge, Davey Grant should not be 9/5 to win this fight – his true price should be closer to 5/4 – and therefore the price available with bet365 is very interesting.
The most likely method of victory for the Englishman would seem to be by decision with the fighters so evenly matched and BetVictor are best priced in that market with Grant 4/1 to win via decision and is worth a small stakes bet.
In the main event, Gray Maynard should be able to win a points decision over Nate Diaz. He showed in their last fight he could edge a distance striking fight and he also has the ability to use effective clinch/cage work against his taller opponent. BetVictor are best priced here again with 23/20 on offer about Maynard winning by decision. Maynard has 9 of 11 career wins by decision.
Interestingly, despite this fight being a main event it is only contested over 3 rounds with it only recently promoted to main event status and thus it increases the liklihood of close scores on the judges’ scorecards. A small bet on the Maynard to win by split decision with BetVictor at 5/1 is in order. Maynard has actually won by split decision in 3 of his last 7 fights (including vs. Diaz) as well as a draw against Frankie Edgar which shows that his fights tend to be close on the cards.
