Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen clash in the main event of UFC 159 with the light-heavyweight title on the line but the best betting opportunities do not lie in that fight and it is elsewhere on the card we have looked for our free betting tips.
Everyone enjoys knockouts, and our main bet on the card involves backing a BIG heavyweight to win his fight early at a price of 23/10 with Paddy Power. Read on for more details on that bet and three other potential bets.
Roy “Big Country” Nelson has won his last two fights, both by stoppage in the first round, and it is our opinion that he is set to do so again on Saturday evening when he takes on Cheick Kongo. In fact, of his last 7 wins, 6 have came via first round stoppage which is a great statistic when you consider he is a strong 4/9 favourite to win outright.
Nelson does absorb a lot of punches but he has the chin to handle the big strikes, whilst the same cannot be said for Kongo who in recent fights has shown a tendency to get tagged by big strikes. Indeed his last loss lasted a little over two minutes when Mark Hunt was able to put stop him.
Nelson looks a great price to win in the first round at 23/10 with Paddy Power, it’s shorter elsewhere and might be shorter come fight time.
One bet which is a touch more speculative but could prove extremely profitable is to back Jim Miller to win his fight in the first round at 6/1 with Paddy Power. Miller takes on the Strikeforce veteran Pat Healy who is riding a six fight winning streak but faces a big step-up in competition here at UFC 159.
This bet does not have the solid statistical backing of the previous bet, although Miller does have three UFC first round wins (of 11), and it is more based on Miller’s performance last time out where he displayed clean striking when blasting Joe Lauzon early and would have finished but for Lauzon’s big heart.
Whilst the first two selections involve the fights ending in the first round, the final two selections involve the need for the use of the judges to decide the winner.
Two somewhat limited strikers in Phil Davis and Vinny Magalhaes do battle on the main card and Davis should just pinch the striking exchanges whilst mixing in some takedowns to take home the decision victory. Paddy Power are again a best price at 10/11.
Michael Bisping has promised fans a first round stoppage of Alan Belcher but he might need to apologise come the end of the fight as he looks set to need the judges’ scorecards for the victory. Bisping is the slightly classier fighter and when he takes on this level of fighter it is usually a decision victory for the Brit – as in his recent fight with Brian Stann.
Bisping is 5/4 with Ladbrokes to take away the decision victory.
