Absolute Poker and UB.com have parted ways with their respective stables of poker professionals, as rumours of bankruptcy persist in the wake of “Black Friday”.
Eleven poker playing professionals have been sacked in total: Prahlad Friedman, who only recently teamed up with UB.com after the departure of Annie Duke, Joe Sebok, Eric Baldwin, Maria Ho, Tiffany Michelle, Brandon Cantu, Scott Ian, Dave Stann, Bryan Devonshire, Adam Levy and Trishelle Cannatella.
Blanca Games, who run both Absolute Poker and UB.com, released a statement regarding the departure of the players, which stated that it had become “necessary to downsize certain aspects of Absolute Poker’s and UB’s operations”, in light of the “legal developments in the United States”.
The statement continues, claiming that it was a “difficult task” for the management to lay off the sponsored poker professionals and that they are “truly saddened that circumstances have dictated this course of action”.
The press statement also comments that the two companies are continuing to hold discussions to try and find an agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice that will allow funds to be returned to American based poker players.
Meanwhile, rumours continue to abound that both UB.com and Absolute Poker will soon file for bankruptcy, since an email intended for Blanca Games shareholders was posted on the internet.
The correspondence, signed by the Madeira Fjord board of directors, claims that Blanca Gaming has “no cash on hand and no prospects for any cash flow for the foreseeable future”, meaning that by law, they are required to begin the bankruptcy process.
The prospect of former UB.com and Absolute Poker players reclaiming their money doesn’t look good for the foreseeable future.
