The 2019 IPL concludes on Sunday, and the play-offs begin on Tuesday
Tuesday 7th May: Qualifier 1
Chennai Super Kings v Mumbai Indians, Chennai
Chennai topped the league table for much of the group stages but finished second after their weekend loss to Kings XI Punjab. The consolation is they host the table topping Mumbai side on their slow and spin friendly Chennai track, and the winner goes straight through to Sunday’s final. The loser plays the winner of the Eliminator that takes place on Wednesday.
Chennai have the huge advantage of Dhoni’s captaincy and finishing ability plus experience throughout the side Mumbai were below par for much of the group stages but despite that won nine games
Prices for this Qualifier have Mumbai 10/11 favourites and CSK even money underdogs with Betfair Sportsbook and Paddy Power. I expect CSK to make the final and don’t think they should be priced up as underdogs.
Wednesday 8th May Eliminator
Delhi Capitals v Sunrisers Hyderabad, Visag
Delhi were the big improvers in 2019 compared to 2018, though they now miss their key strike bowler Rabada who has returned to South Africa with a back niggle. Sunrisers were reliant on Warner and Bairstow for much of their batting firepower throughout the group stages but both are now missing with their national sides for World Cup preparations. Sunrisers middle order batting has been poor all tournament and this is the key reason that last year’s finalists crept into the play offs in fourth place with only six wins in 14 games.
The winner of this games moves forward to face the loser of the first Qualifier match the day before, later this week. Paddy Power have Delhi priced at 4/5, Sunrisers at evens and I expect Delhi to win
