This long awaited fight has been stymied by a range of convoluted disputes between their two camps. It is arguably coming too late in both men’s careers but of course is still very keenly anticipated. The ‘fight of the century’ asit is dubbed is taking place on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas is expected to be the richest in boxing history.

The unbeaten Mayweather (47-0-0) puts his WBC and WBA titles on the line for the welterweight championship unification fight while Pacquiao (57-5-2) is the WBO champion and is the first boxer in history to win ten world titles in eight different weight divisions.

Manny Pacquiao

Pacquiao is now 36 years old and his peak was 2008-2011, in which time he beat Oscar De la Hoya,Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto and Shane Mosley.

Since then, Pacquiao got knocked out in 2012 by 38 year old Juan Manuel Marquez in an upset.  This seemed to signal the end of Pacquiao at his peak and a feeling of vulnerability persists even after three points wins since.  The old swashbuckling  style seems to have given way to a more considered style.

Back in 2008-2011 when Pacquiao was knocking out opponents, you could see him potentially negating Mayweather’s skills with power, but now it seems he will have to engage in a boxing match in which most observers consider he starts with a disadvantage.

Floyd Mayweather

Mayweather has fought Maidana twice in recent fights, winning both, the second fight more comfortably than the first. Both displayed the trademark Mayweather style of controlling fights from distance and stellar defense. Mayweather also comfortably beat Saul Alvarez, who had to lose a lot of weight to make the fight happen.  Mayweather is now 38 years old and this fight is going to be about who has aged the least, who has maintained their speed and also ability to take a punch.

Betting odds

This fight of course is a huge betting heat. Bookmakers make Mayweather the odds-on favourite.  1/2 Floyd Mayweather; 15/8 Manny Pacquiao; 16/1 draw

Method of result: 11/2 Mayweather KO, TKO or DQ; 5/1 Pacquiao KO, TKO or DQ; 8/11 Mayweather decision or technical decision; 9/2 Pacquiao decision or technical decision.

The last five Mayweather victories have come via decision, and he has just one knockout since his fight with Ricky Hatton was stopped early in 2007. Pacquiao was knocked out by Juan Manuel Marquez in Dec. 2012. The loss was the first time Pacquiao had been knocked out in 13 years.

The obvious choice is Mayweather on points with Pacquiao not as explosive as he once was and Mayweather’s ability to avoid being hit undiminished.

The most unlikely outcome of course is a draw. Mayweather has never been involved in a draw, and Pacquiao’s last draw came in 2004. This may be cynical, but with the fight such a financial bonanza for so many stakeholders,I ‘ll have a small stakers saver on a draw, and another bout down the line….
