Saturday sees one game in the T20 Group stages as in the Midlands Group a resurgent Warwickshire take on top of the table Northants at Edgbaston

Recommendation

Warwickshire to beat Northants at 6/4 Bet365

This column did well out of Northants as underdogs in midweek when they surged to the top of the Midlands Group table by beating Somerset at home. This gave them five wins out of six in the Group, and maintained their unbeaten home record in the competition so far this season

On Saturday beginning at 1pm this in form and transformed team from prior seasons visits Edgbaston in Birmingham to play one of the pre-tournament favourites Warwickshire.

Northants success this season is built on two major changes from the past. Investment in overseas players in the top six has dramatically improved the scoring power and in different games this season both Richard Levi and Cameron White have made match winning contributions. The second change is in the “death” bowling in the later stages of innings where the maturation of emerging star David Willey has combined with the discovery of Mohammed Azharullah to make almost any target defendable.

However, at a best price of 8/13 for tomorrow, much of Northants improvement is now being factored into prices.

Instead, we have a very rare opportunity to back Warwickshire at odds-against at home (6/4 currently) against a Division two county championship side which while performing well is dwarfed in terms of resources by the Warwickshire squad.

Warwickshire had a very disappointing start to the season, affected by injury and poor form. However this has turned round dramatically in July. Warwickshire have beaten Nottinghamshire and Middlesex comfortably to win their last two County Championship games and in T20, having begun with three consecutive losses, have won their last two games with ease. This is a side that has regained form and with a range of top class players from England and England Lions players Varun Chopra and Chris Woakes to seasoned one day competition players Rikki Clarke and Darren Maddy at their disposal are going to be a real threat.

Not only that, but they have to win from here on in to qualify for the knock out stages of the T20 tournament. Loathe as I am to desert Northants, very much a developing side, 6/4 on Warwickshire is such an unusual price for a high powered team that has returned to form with a bang recently that it cannot be ignored
