The Super Bowl is always one of the biggest sports betting days of the year. Super Bowl LI between the Patriots and Falcons will be no different especially when it comes to prop bets.
Betting on who will win the game (and/or cover the spread) is just the start of what you can bet on at the Super Bowl where the Patriots are currently favoured by three points and 58 points are expected in the game.
Bookmakers have many Super Bowl LI prop bets regarding the scoring in the game and how and when scoring plays will occur. For example for the first scoring play of the game, safeties are the biggest potential money-makers with a 20/1 line for either team. Two of the last five Super Bowls have started with safeties, Patriots-Giants in Super Bowl XLVI and Broncos-Seahawks in Super Bowl XLVIII.
You can also bet on who will win the Super Bowl MVP award. Of course quarterbacks Tom Brady and Matt Ryan have the best odds to win at 10/11 and 7/4 respectively in what could be a high scoring game
There are dozens of other prop bets that you can make related to the actual game but books also have some “fun bets” based on the National Anthem and Halftime Show. The over/under for Luke Bryan’s length of time to sing the National Anthem is currently at 2 minutes 10 seconds. You can even bet on whether Lady Gaga will have a “wardrobe malfunction” during her Halftime Show performance, predict her first song or her hair colour for the show.
My shortlist is as follows
- First touchdown scorer
Opening drive touchdowns though have become a given in Falcons games. Going back to mid November Atlanta have scored a touchdown on their first possession for 8 games in a row.
Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman combined for 2,482 yards from scrimmage and 24 touchdowns this season, the most of any duo in the NFL.. The Atlanta offensive coordinator whose scheme has proved so effective is Kyle Shanahan and Coleman was quoted as saying that he appreciates how hard Shanahan works to create positive matchups for the backs by splitting them wide among other wrinkles
Obviously this market is fraught with difficulty for this game with so many potential options. This is somewhat reflected in it being a market with 8-1 co-favourites of three (Freeman, Julio and Blount) and no less than eleven players shorter than 20-1 in the betting.
The argument for Tevin Coleman is about his effectiveness in this scheme and the likely match-up in this game and at 12-1 generally he’s under-rated compared to Freeman here
- First score
In what should be a high-scoring game, the first score to be a touchdown is 8/15 and for more value the first score to be an Atlanta Touchdown is 9/4 with William Hill.
- Shortest touchdown
With a renowned short yardage back in LeGarrette Blount on the Patriots and the two Atlanta running backs mentioned above, with both teams having strong offensive lines a short yardage touchdown looks very likely. Under 1.5 yards is 8/11 with Ladbrokes
– Length of national anthem
2.10 or over is Evens with Sky Bet. Country singer Luke Bryan is singing it this year and he has gone over 2.10 the three previous times he’s done the anthem on a big stage The average length of the national anthem in the last 11 Super-Bowls has been under 2 minutes, though.
