The Carolina Panthers are looking for their first Super Bowl title on February 7. They go into the game with a 15-1 regular season record and having brushed aside the Arizona Cardinals in the NFC Conference game scoring over 50 points in a dominant performance The Denver Broncos are seeking their third title. Their quarterback Peyton Manning, an all time great in possibly his last NFL game, is looking fro a second Super-bowl ring.

The Panthers are the more complete team. Carolina is hoping to put together a dynasty and with a young head coach, young quarterback and talented defense, could be well on its way. The Broncos are the more experienced team but with Manning near the end of his career nand a few key players set to leave in free agency this is their best chance to win a title before an inevitable rebuild under a new quarterback.

Carolina has most of the answers with a dominant front four, a terrific quarterback and a group of quality running backs. Denver’s defense is elite, but the offense is shaky at best. The Broncos & Panthers ranked 1st and 2nd in defensive efficiency. They were the top 2 teams in that statistic the last 9 weeks of regular season. I feel confident that the Panthers will contain the Broncos offense which was 19th in the NFL for points per game this season. The Broncos will be wary of taking risks as the Panthers defense is a machine, with a pass rush, run stoppers, rangy linebackers and a noted secondary. They were top of the NFL for turnovers generated this season.

On the other side of the ball the Panthers were the top scoring team in the league and the key battle in this game is between Cam Newton and the league’s top offense against the top NFL defense of the Broncos who dominated the Patriots in the AFC title game, hitting Tom Brady 23 times and allowing the side to overcome a shaky offense. Newton was the first-overall pick in 2011 by Carolina and has now won three consecutive NFC South titles with a Super Bowl appearance.

This could be one of the lower scoring Super-bowls and a team scoring 25+ points will be confident of winning such is the strength of the two defenses.

In terms of the markets the Panthers, unsurprisingly after such a comprehensive win over the Cardinals, are 5.5 point favourites on the spread. The game has a 45 point over/under total. 5.5 points might feel a lot against the number one league defense, but this has the chance of being quite a one sided game unless the Denver offense fires sufficiently to keep them competitive with Newton and the Carolina offense.

Recommendation Carolina Panthers -5.5 points 10/11 Ladbrokes

As ever with the Super-bowl there are many of prop markets on offer for one of the biggest betting events of the year. Here are a number that appeal:

First Touchdown Scorer Cam Newton 8/1 William Hill

The Panthers top the league with 22 rushing touchdowns this season. Newton has 12 of these, being an effective running threat especially close to the goal-line

First Scoring Play Carolina Panthers Field Goal 100/30 William Hill

A match-up with two top defenses, I wouldn’t expect an explosive side by either team

First Offensive play: Run 8/13 William Hill

A conservative option for the first play is by far the most likely result

First half total points Under 22.5 Evens BetfairSportsbook

I expect a comparatively low scoring Super-bowl. Two top defenses, Denver with problems in offensive production and Carolina’s weaknesses and receiver suggest a game that will be slow to fire.
