For the first time in the last six years, a team from the capital won the championship and now Steaua Bucuresti attempts to build on this success by winning the Super Cup. They will opposed by Petrolul, a team that used to play in the lower divisions but now dreams of a Europa League berth.
Bet: Steaua Bucuresti
Odds: William Hill 2.10
The two teams met several times one decade ago but following Petrolul’s relegation the rivalry between the two teams faded. Immediately after they clawed their way back to Liga 1, the conflict was reignited and quite often the games ended abruptly due to violence erupting on the field and in the stands. The Super Cup will be played in Bucharest, which gives Steaua home field advantage and makes it very likely for the National Arena to be packed with their fans.
With the domestic championship in recess, the two teams are playing mostly friendly games and their recent record is ambivalent. Both have split points with their opponents and the only thing worth mentioning is that the offense is not working as expected for neither of them. Steaua will have to start with three strikers tonight, with Costea spearheading the offensive while Adi and Iancu tagging along after the two of them scored eight goals each in the regular season. The visitors will respond with a 4-4-2 starting formation and will have Bokila and Younes pairing up in the attack.
Petrolul missed out on the chance to finish second in the domestic championship and they could well succumb to pressure once again when they try to win the first Super Cup in club history. Steaua has loads of experience and the better team, two rock-solid arguments in favor of backing the hosts at odds of 2.10 with William Hill.
