The lead-up to the Davis Cup Finals seems to be all about Roger Federer, who is apparently still struggling with some back issues, but he isn’t the only member of the Swiss team. Stanislas Wawrinka will have a big role to play as well – and not only in the first match of the tie.

On one hand, the focus on Roger Federer is quite understandable, because winning without him would be an incredibly tough task for the Swiss team. Stanislas Wawrinka might be good enough to win both of his singles matches and he could therefore carry the burden on his shoulders, but what about the third point? The rest of the team is so weak in comparison to the rest of the French team that it is nearly unthinkable that the Swiss could win without the world’s number two getting at least one point from the singles. As things stand now, it seems that Federer is going to play on Friday, although chances are that he won’t be able to play without any limitations.

Stanislas Wawrinka could make the task easier for him by beating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the first match of the tie and we actually think that there is value in backing him to do just that. The conditions will suit the Frenchman, who is also going to get a lot of support from the home fans, but Tsonga hasn’t done a great deal recently and he’s actually been rather shaky throughout the entire season, so it is Wawrinka who should have a decent edge coming into the match. Shrewd punters could also consider betting on the match being a five-setter, as the circumstances are such that it certainly can’t be ruled out.
