It is always hard to predict the performances of players who manage to upset one of the big names in tennis and it seems that the general trend is that such players usually struggle to turn up in the same kind of form in the very next match, but Sergiy Stakhovsky looks set to turn that trend around and defeat Jurgen Melzer on Friday.

In fact, you could easily say that Jurgen Melzer should have lost his match against Julian Reister, as the only thing that carried him through to the third round was the inability of Reister to produce his best tennis in the tie-breaks. The bottom line, however, is that Melzer has not been anywhere near his top form in recent weeks and months – and it actually seems that he might also be carrying an injury at the moment.

He is obviously not going to give up due to the fact that this is a Grand Slam, but you can be sure that he will find it hard to deal with Sergiy Stakhovsky. The Ukrainian will probably need a few moments in order to find his range on the smaller court, but he should be able to start outplaying Melzer soon after that. There might be some patches of rain around and that could help Melzer a little bit, but that alone shouldn’t be enough to save him from a defeat today.

At the end of the day, there is no reason to believe that this is going to be a 50/50 match, which is what the bookies seem to be thinking at the moment. Stakhovsky should have the edge in this match-up – and he should be able to convert it into something tangible if he gets through the first few games without any difficulties.
