Shockingly, the women’s part of the US Open has somehow brought less upsets than the men’s one, especially as far as the later rounds are concerned. Yesterday’s victories of Kei Nishikori and Marin Cilic will surely enter the history books, but there will be more time to worry about that match later on. Today, we’ll see another stunning contest between two players that have been playing extremely well over the last couple of weeks, Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki.

The world’s number one will be entering the match as the defending champion and her stunning record against the Dane suggests that she should be able to win the famous trophy yet again, although one shouldn’t underestimate Wozniacki’s chances after her incredible victory against Maria Sharapova and after her superb fight against Shuai Peng in the previous round. She was in a very bad spot in the first half of the season and she did surprisingly little before the start of the US Open Series, but she turned everything around and dominated over that stretch, which meant that she entered the final Grand Slam of the season in a really good form.

Her consistent defending is back and she also appears to be able to pull off a winner every now and then, which confirms that she’s worked really hard on her game and that she’s indeed improved a lot over the last couple of months. She’s also sorted her personal life out and it’s clear that she’s really enjoying her tennis at the moment, so her attitude should allow her to be fairly competitive today. It will be an uphill struggle against the American number one, but she played well against her in Montreal and Cincinnati, so a good performance is to be expected from her in New York as well.
