Thursday is not going to be the most interesting day of the year if you are a fan of men’s tennis, but we should nevertheless get to see two interesting singles matches from the women’s section of the draw.

The match that is going to see Maria Sharapova trying to defeat Viktoria Azarenka will probably get more attention than the second one, but it would not be surprising to see the second semi-final being the more interesting of the two at the end of the day. Sara Errani, the world’s number five, has done incredibly well to get to this stage of the tournament and she will take plenty of confidence after seeing Kuznetsova doing well against Serena Williams, so there is every chance that the duel between her and the world’s number one isn’t going to be as one-sided as many American fans would like it to be.

The two have met a few weeks ago over in Madrid and Williams was not able to cover a 6.5 games handicap back then, so the question is quite obvious – will she be able to cover a handicap that is a bit higher than that line today or will she struggle to establish any sort of dominance over the Italian once again? Well, judging from what we have seen in recent days, the second answer does look quite likely to be the correct one, as Errani has been raising her level of play since the start of the tournament, while Williams has been struggling to get things going against both Kuznetsova and Vinci.

It would be crazy to think that the Italian will be able to challenge the American or run her close, but those who are going to back the plus handicap today won’t really need to see that in order to win their bets. A clean and focused performance from Errani should be enough – and there is every chance that we are going to see exactly that today.
