San Diego is tied with reigning champion San Francisco but for all the wrong reasons, as they sit at the bottom of the West division with 54 points. They could overtake their rivals by winning the final game of the series against the New York Mets, after the visitors took the first two.
Bet: NY Mets
Odds: Winner Sports 2.05
The Mets are out of the playoffs race, but they are playing better than they did most of the season, and came painfully close to end the LA Dodgers’ winning streak. The starting pitchers in general were sharp this week and Jenrry Mejia will try to build on his last two outings, while counting on more support from his teammates. He lost two out of three decisions despite posting an ERA of 2.22 and he lasted for six full innings before conceding three runs against the Dodgers in Los Angeles.
San Diego expected Edinson Volquez to strengthen their pitching rotation, but this acquisition proved to be a flop, as the starting pitcher lost 10 decisions so far. He also has one of the worst ERA’s in the majors and conceives an average of six runs per game, a worrisome figure ahead of this game against the Mets. Petco Park is traditionally a stadium favoring starting pitchers, but this will only amplify the gap between Mejia and Volquez as they are at the opposite end of form.
The New York Mets are not the best traveling team, but they still have a better record away from home than at Citi Field. Winner Sports has higher than average odds of 2.05 for the Mets to sweep the Padres and given the dominant manner in which they won the first two games, it is worth giving them credit.
