Milos Raonic, the world’s number thirteen, is certainly among the players that are hoping to leave their bad grass court performances behind by doing well in Washington this week.

Things are definitely looking much brighter for the Canadian now that the grass court part of the season is behind him, as he was struggling to get wins on the board and even looked completely clueless against good players like Gael Monfils and Ivan Dodig. The return to hard courts will surely bring plenty of smiles for him and he will undoubtedly see his duel against Samuel Groth as one that he should be able to walk through without having to break any sweat.

However, Groth’s surprising victory over Denis Kudla should give some worries to those that would want to back the Canadian to prevail in two straightforward sets. It is almost impossible to believe that Raonic might lose in his very first match of the tournament and that is indeed not likely to happen, but Raonic does have one weak spot and Groth seems to have the right sort of game to exploit that weakness.

What we are talking about, of course, is the fact that Milos Raonic often struggles on return. He might have improved tremendously in recent years, but players that can serve big are still able to keep clashes with him as tight as they can possibly be. With Groth fully capable of serving plenty of aces, this could turn out to be a very tough match-up for Raonic – and those who are looking for some value today should definitely consider backing the Australian to do some damage in the city of Washington today.
