The ATP event in Hamburg will certainly be in the centre of attention over the next few days, as tennis fans are going to see the likes of Roger Federer and Tommy Haas in action on the clay courts in Germany.

However, one should perhaps also take a closer look at some of the other matches and the one that will see Robin Haase and Jerzy Janowicz playing against each other for the second time in this season might be among those matches that offer some value for those that are willing to back big underdogs.

The previous meeting between the two might have finished with a fairly comfortable victory for the Pole, but that was back in the French Open and the conditions in Paris are very different to those that are on offer in Hamburg this week. Most importantly, the conditions in Hamburg offer low bounce – and that is something that Jerzy Janowicz usually struggles to deal with. He couldn’t deal with it in the doubles on Tuesday – and it is hard to see his level of comfort changing in the space of one day.

On the other hand, Robin Haase produced a very good comeback against Diego Schwartzman, who is a very skilled clay court specialist, so he may feel that he has a legitimate shot at beating Janowicz this time around. It will be a battle of big serves and there won’t be too many breaks on the board today, but the odds suggest that Janowicz is simply going to storm through to the third round and that seems to be a bit wrong. The odds for the Dutchman are simply too big here – and anything above, say, 3.50, should be worth a small bet.
