The deciding set of the clash between Ivan Dodig and Juan Martin del Potro might have left a pretty bad after-taste, but it is time to move on with a new pick on Thursday, which may prove to be a very crucial day for many of the favourites in Montreal.

Despite that, there is one favourite that should not really struggle as much as some of the other ones. Namely, let’s talk about the chances of the world’s number nine, Richard Gasquet, against the world’s number eleven, Kei Nishikori. On paper, it might look like a fairly difficult challenge for the Frenchman, as he rarely does too well against tenacious players like Nishikori, but he has beaten him quite handily on two previous occasions and this occasion should not be any different in that regard.

Many might have been looking to oppose Gasquet in his match against Martin Klizan, as there have been some doubts about his form before the start of this event, but he took that match in a very professional manner and dispatched the Slovak for the loss of just five games. On the other hand, the doubts about Kei Nishikori’s form have only grown since his defeat against Marcos Baghdatis, as he struggled to defeat Peter Polansky and Andreas Seppi since then.

Richard Gasquet is a much stronger player than the two and he also has a playing style that works against the Japanese number one, so this is really is his match to lose by the looks of things. The bookies have set the handicap line at just three games, which is a line that Gasquet has covered in both of the previous meetings between the two and which he should be able to cover today as well.
