The men’s tournament in Houston didn’t see much play on Wednesday due to bad weather, but Thursday should see plenty of exciting matches, especially since local heroes like Sam Querrey and John Isner will be in action.

Tommy Haas, the world’s number fourteen, is also going to start his Houston campaign with a match against Ricardas Berankis today. He will be coming into that battle as a big favourite after his stunning performances in Miami, but one nevertheless has to feel that he might be a bit overrated right now.

Of course, he was playing superb tennis in Miami, but that was a tournament that he was really focusing on. The tournament in Houston isn’t that important and one really has to question his motivation for playing here. He is signed up for the big event in Monte Carlo that isn’t that far away, so that will surely be at the back of his mind and he might not be willing to try his hardest in Houston this week.

Meanwhile, Ricardas Berankis won’t be heading to Monaco this year, so he can focus on his performance in Houston. The Lithuanian is a very talented lad and he produced a solid performance against Jesse Levine, so he should have enough to start the match well and put some pressure on the German.

Everyone obviously likes Haas and I am sure that he is going to get plenty of support from the local tennis fans, but the truth is that the odds are just a bit off here. He might be a big favourite, but the circumstances are all stacked against him and a loss simply cannot be completely ruled out today. Therefore, there is only one possible recommendation today with the odds this good.
