Bookmakers reacted to last night’s 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane by clipping the odds of the two Manchester teams for Premier League glory, while Chelsea and Tottenham were eased out to a best price of 26.00 (Victor Chandler).
Tottenham bossed the early part of the game and soon took the lead after Emmanuel Adebayor tapped in from close range, but Chelsea equalised against the run of play and in controversial fashion, as the ball appeared to strike the hand of Ashley Cole, who then sent in a delicious cross for Daniel Sturridge to score his tenth goal of the campaign.
The second half lacked the fluency of the first, though both Tottenham and Chelsea had chances to win the match – none better than when Adebayor beat the keeper with seconds remaining, only for John Terry to make a last ditch sliding clearance.
This result ensured that neither Tottenham nor Chelsea could make up on ground on second placed Manchester United, prompting bookmakers to trim the odds of the top two to lift the Premier League title come the end of the season. League leaders Manchester City are now no bigger than 1.62 (Boylesports, Ladbrokes) while Manchester United are a best price of 3.00 (Victor Chandler, William Hill).
Tottenham are now the highest placed London side in the Premier League at Christmas for the first time since 1995, but after last night’s 1-1 draw are a best price of 26.00 (Victor Chandler). Chelsea remain similarly priced, suggesting that layers now believe the Premier League title race can only be between the two Manchester sides.
The “Top Four Finish” market remained largely unchanged, with William Hill pricing Chelsea and Tottenham at a stand out 1.40 and 1.57 respectively. Arsenal are now no bigger than 2.25 (Stan James) to qualify for the Champions League, with Liverpool at 3.50 (Bet365).
