The PokerStars Caribbean Adventure is well underway, with the $10,000 buy-in No Limit Hold’em tournament breaking attendance records for the eighth year running.
647 poker players packed into the ballroom of the Atlantis Resort and Casino for Day 1A of the Caribbean Adventure, with an impressive 913 more buying in on Day 1B, to create a total tournament field of 1,560 and a healthy prize pool of over $15,000,000.
The winner of the 2011 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure is set to scoop $2.3 million, with $1.8 million reserved for the runner up.
Still in the hunt for that huge poker payday are Daniel Alaei, Dwyte Pilgrim, J.P. Kelly, Phil Ivey and former World Series of Poker Main Event winner, Chris Moneymaker.
Other star names from the world of poker to attend the 2011 PCA include Jennifer Tilly, Daniel Negreanu, Greg Raymer and Viktor Blom, the man recently outed as “Isildur1”, the previously unknown internet poker phenomenon.
PokerStars Pro Pieter de Korver leads the way at the close of play on Day 1B, slightly ahead of Lebanon’s Walid Bou-Habib, who qualified for the PCA thanks to an online PokerStars satellite.
Before the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Main Event kicked off on Saturday, there was the small matter of the $100,000 buy-in Super High Roller event, which attracted an impressive 38 players, to create a first prize of $1.5 million.
The seven handed Super High Roller final table was brimming with poker playing talent, with Humberto Brenes, Daniel Negreanu, Eugene Katchalov and chip leader Nick Schulman all taking a seat. The action was filmed for television and will make for entertaining viewing when broadcast later this year.
Katchalov, who won the World Poker Tour Five Diamond Poker Classic in 2007, came out of the PCA Super High Roller tournament on top, beating Daniel Negreanu at the heads up stage.
Negreanu was unlucky, as Katchalov set the Canadian all-in whilst holding pocket fours and Negreanu made the call with two fives. A flop of A – 8 – T changed nothing but a 4 on the turn as good as won the event for Katchalov, with a 2 on the river sealing the deal.
Although Negreanu couldn’t quite take the top spot in the tournament, his $1 million consolation prize meant that he passed Phil Ivey on the all time money list.
