Poker Tournament Roundup – EPT, WSOP, IPT and APPT

There has been plenty of tournament action in the poker world of late, headlined by the return of the European Poker Tour, which has rolled into the Czech Republic for its last tournament in 2010.

The EPT event in Prague, a €5,000 + €300 No Limit Hold’em tournament, kicked off with Day 1A on Monday and Day 1B on Tuesday, attracting a total of 563 players and creating a prize pool of €2,730,550. The top 80 players will be payed and first prize is a juicy €640,000.

The number of entrants fell only slightly on last year’s EPT Prague attendance, an impressive feat considering the recent extreme weather conditions across Europe, which have caused all kinds of problems for flights, trains and roads across the continent.

The defending EPT Prague champion Jan Skampa fell on Day 1A, guaranteeing a new champion and leading the chase for the title is Dirk Richter, with just short of 300,000 in tournament chips.

Others attending the EPT Prague event include former champions Arnaud Mattern and Salvatore Bonavena, as well as Marcel Luske, Luca Pagano, Martin Hruby and Liv Boeree.

The final table of Prague’s European Poker Tour event will take place on Saturday December 18th.

In other poker tournament news, Tuesday saw the completion of the World Series of Poker Circuit event at Harrah’s Atlantic City.

The final table of nine took six hours to crown a champion, Matthew Waxman, who took home $117,797 in prize money, as well as the usual WSOP Circuit event gold ring.
Waxman beat Jesus Cabrera ($72,824) to the top spot, with Mark Sykes finishing in third ($53,126).

The PokerStars Italian Poker Tour (IPT) was in San Remo this week, with a €2,000 + €200 No Limit Hold’em tournament that drew 342 players and created a €663,420 prize pool.

The tournament was eventually won by Antonio Caponnetto who took home €170,000, as well as the IPT title. He defeated Riccardo Lacchinelli, who earned €110,000 by way of consolation.

The PokerStars Asia Pacific Poker Tour Grand Final (APPT) took place in Sydney, Australia over the weekend, with well known online player Jonathan “xMONSTERxDONGx” Karamalikis taking down a tough final table.

The 22 year old beat off competition from the 2008 APPT Macau champion Eddy Sabat, Roland de Wolfe and Daniel Negreanu to win the first prize, which moves Karamalikis into the top ten on the Australian all time money winner’s list.

Stay tuned for all the latest updates from the biggest and best poker tournaments around the world.

Double Hold'em - Basic Strategy Part 2
Following on from the first part of our beginner’s guide to “Double Hold’em“, PartyPoker’s latest creation, let us now have a look at some other important concepts.

How To Play The Hand - NL Hold'em and Low Pocket Pair
You’re playing a $0.5 / $1 No Limit Hold’em ring game at your regular pokerroom and there are seven opponents. The standard of play is nothing out of the ordinary; not too aggressive, not too tight and there is one other player at the table who you feel is as good as yourself, seated in the small blind. You are dealt two 8c – 8s on the button.

Understanding Expected Value
The term “Expected Value” or “EV” relates to the chances you have of winning the pot, in comparison to the percentage of money you have to put into it. It is a key element of the game for players who win at poker long term because they understand that if the odds are in their favour, even when they lose one hand occasionally, overall they will continue to win money.

Playing Against a Pre-Flop Raise
You’re playing No Limit Texas Hold’em and you’re dealt a premium hand. A player in front of you opens with a raise. It’s a great feeling, but it’s just as important to play this situation correctly as it is to fold a poor hand or to call when the pot odds are right, if you are to build a bankroll and be a winning poker player in the long term. So what needs to be considered to ensure the hand is played optimally?

Poker Strategy: How To Cope When Running Bad
If you've played poker for any length of time, be it on the internet, at your local casino or even at a regular home game, you're bound to have experienced a prolonged run of bad luck. Because you're human, it probably affected your game for the worse too. Here's some advice on how to cope when running bad at poker.

Hold'em's Odd(s) Book – gives you an edge
In 1996, Mike Petriv wrote the first fully-comprehensive book on poker odds - "Hold'em's Odd(s) Book – gives you an edge". Its cheap, spiral bound format belies the content between its covers and the book has provided an invaluable source of information for poker players at all stages of their game, the world over.
