Philadelphia finally ended its long slide and has a rare chance of winning a series against San Francisco Giants after capturing the opening game. San Francisco is mired in its own losing streak and tries to avoid its sixth straight defeat, but its away record doesn’t give the Giants too many reasons for optimism.
Odds: Winner Sports 1.90
Philadelphia struggled offensively before finally scoring seven runs yesterday and they hope to replicate the performance against Chad Gaudin. The pitcher is still waiting for an opportunity to secure a place in San Francisco’s rotation as his been used mostly as a reliever. In his last outing against Cincinnati he conceded six runs over just three innings and his team lost by 8-3. Before that match though, he limited opponents to less than one run per game on average and that’s the kind of performance that he’s aiming.
Philadelphia will be giving the ball to Kyle Kendrick who is one of the most promising pitchers in the league despite his recent struggles. He was tagged to more than five runs per game in his last three starts but overall he has a winning record with a total of 18 decisions. Unlike his counterpart who has a great deal to prove, Philadelphia will cut Kyle some slack even if he doesn’t meet their expectations.
Losing eight consecutive games has been devastating for Philadelphia and its chances to make the playoffs in 2013, but not everything is lost. The Phillies have only theoretical chances of playing baseball in October but at least tonight they are favorites to win. Winner Sports has them valued at 1.90, odds that without being spectacular are accurately reflecting their first chance of prevailing.
