The New York Rangers missed out on a great opportunity to win the series in Montréal, and their tremendous effort in the second period was rendered useless in the last 20 minutes. The Canadians scored seven goals for the first time in these playoffs and avenged the crushing defeat suffered in the opening game.
Bet: NY Rangers
Odds: Winner Sports 1.90
The Canadians rose to the occasion and found the strength to push the series into a sixth game, but they are yet to win back-to-back matches. The last time they traveled to Madison Square Garden, they won the first game and lost the second, while scoring a total of five goals and allowing just as many. The Rangers relaxed prematurely last night and allowed three games in a relatively quick succession, and committed the same mistake in the final minutes of the game after tying the score in the second period.
This kind of offensive hockey doesn’t suit him, as the Rangers are better at defending and exercising pressure on the wings. Lundqvist was pulled after allowing four goals on 19 shots, but he’s expected to return in the net after backup goalie Cam Talbot didn’t fare much better. Derek Stepan and Rick Nash were the key players so far for the New Yorkers and they are the ones to watch for tonight.
The Rangers simply can’t afford to allow Montréal to tie the score and return home to play the decisive game. The odds of winning the series if they lose Game 6 are not that good and that’s why NY will throw everything they’ve got at the Canadians. Winner Sports is unwilling to offer odds higher than 1.90 and it’s hard to blame the bookie, given the fact that the New Yorkers were clearly the better team throughout the series.
