Novak Djokovic, the world’s number one, is going to start his Wimbledon campaign knowing that his biggest rival, Rafael Nadal, is already out of the tournament, which should certainly affect him in one way or another.

You would think that the fact that he is now a firm favourite for the title might affect his nerves, but it is actually quite likely that the exact opposite of that will happen. Namely, he might simply want to go out there and show that he is fully ready and prepared for the challenge, especially after seeing Roger Federer and Andy Murray cruising through to the second round on Monday.

On paper, it might look like Florian Mayer might be a tricky match-up for the Serb, as he has a pretty unconventional arsenal of shots that should allow him to take advantage of the specific conditions that are present in London, but that shouldn’t really matter that much here. Djokovic has played against him before, so he will know what to expect – and the fact that he has never had any real problems against the German can only help him in that regard. And, to top things off, Mayer has virtually no form under his belt, with his best recent results coming against players far below the level of Novak Djokovic.

Therefore, what may look like a tricky match-up at first glance might actually turn out to be a very straightforward affair at the end of the day. The handicap line might look quite high considering that Mayer is a fairly strong player, but it is quite reasonable to expect one very easy set for the Serb and that should see the line covered.
