The first week of the new season and the battle to get to Superbowl 50 begins. Here’s a look at some betting opportunites for the opening games

Minnesota Vikings -2.5 versus San Francisco 49ers 37/40 BetVictor

It’s the first week of the season, so tentative bets only, but on what we can see from pre-season, free agency and the draft in the off-season:

Carolina Panthers @ Jacksonville Jaguars

Jacksonville begin the season as 3 point home underdogs to the Panthers, who won a very poor NFC South division last year. It has been a difficult off-season for the Panthers though, with number one receiver Kelvin Benjamin now injured for this season, weaknesses on the offensive line and going into this game several defensive starters injured. Whilst they will be competitive under Cam Newton his offensive options look limited at the start of the season, and in this game the team is priced off last season

Jacksonville will be hoping for a more competiitve season this time round, especially with Blake Bortles in his second year as Quarterback. Whilst unlikely to be a play-off team yet there are enough signs that pricing them as home underdogs against all but the best sides could be too cautious. They have threats at wide receiver (Robinson, Lee, Hurns) and a talented rookie (Yeldon) complementing Denard Robinson at running back. With investment in the offensive line in front, I’ll take them +3 points at Even money generally here

Cleveland Browns @ New York Jets

Two more teams that struggled last year. Cleveland enter the season with what looks lime one of the least dynamic group of skill position players in the league from quarterback through running back and wide receiver. The defense should be competitive but whether this will win them many games with their offensive outlook is doubtful

Much has changed for the Jets in the off-season both in coaching and in personnel. Defensively they should be extremely competitive and i like them to restrict the Browns point scoring substantially, which is why the Jets -3 appeals. With WB Geno Smith out, Ryan Fitzpatrick plays  Fitzpatrick is capable of providing competent quarterback play and is one of the best backups in the league. With a spread offense that often floods the field with four- and five-receiver sets likely Fitzpatrick could put up some numbers to the likes of Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker out wide

Minnesota Vikings at San Francisco 49ers

The last game of the the weekend, the second mondaty night football game on the west coast, sees play off dark orse vikings travel to San Francisco

The 49ers have had a very difficult off-season with unexpected player departures, and should have a rebuilding season ahead with young players allied to their remaining core of veterans

For the Vikings Teddy Bridgewater was an impressive rookie quarterback and this year Adrian Peterson is back. Teams will not be able to concentrate on stopping the run exclusively, as they uased to do when the Vikings were sub-par at quarterback, and on the other side of the ball the defense enters year two of coach Zimmer’s system witbh a lot of young drafted talent

I like Minnesota getting less than a field goal on the points spread to stat their season well
