Nearing the half way point in the season, and the battle for play-off spots is intensifying. What are the best bets identified for this week?

New York Jets at New England Patriots

Thursday night sees an AFC East clash, with the so far very disappointing Jets ten point underdogs at the Patriots. Double digit underdogs routinely interest me, and indeed this past week several almost covered against big favourites. Included amongst these were the Jets, who were seven points down to the powerful Broncos with only a minute to go.

The Jets might succeed at +10 on Thursday night football , though accepting this is a deeply contrarian view likely to be at odds with most of the “public money” . Their defense is very stout, especially against the run and the Patriots have issues of their own, with Brady carrying an ankle injury, leading running back Ridley ruled out for the season last weekend and the team a shadow of its former self so far this year

To be confident of success here, we would ideally want the Jets offense to finally click into sync, which has been noticeably absent all season, a combination of quarterback inconsistency and lack of talent in skill positions like wide receiver, but the 10/11 bWin offer on the Jets +10 is a sporting bet

New Orleans Saints at Detroit Lions

In most recent seasons you could look forward to this game being a shoot-out, with Drew Brees and Matthew Stafford at the helm of powerful offenses. Tis match-up looks somewhat different though. For the Lions star wide receiver Calvin Johnson is out and it his his ability and threat that opens up the offense. Wthout him, against a poor Minnesota side this past weekend, the Lions struggled to 17 points.

For the Saints, star tight end Jimmy Graham is injured, and again without having to account for him, the opposing defense can key in on the other Saints offensive options.

With the two teams looking less prolific than normal, a points total quote of 49.5 (over/under 10/11 BetVictor) looks like it could be at least 5 points too high

Houston Texans at Pittsburgh Steelers

Monday night football sees the improving Texans travel to the frustratingly inconsistent Steelers as 3 point underdogs (21/20 Bet365). Houston’s defense is legitimately good, led by the best defender in the league JJ Watt who will be a huge challenge for the Pittsburgh offensive line here

Houston’s offense lacks a quarterback, one of the few pieces they need to add to look like a play-off team but in Arian Foster and the running game they have a very effective way to control the clock and score points. I have more confidence in them as a team than the Steelers, who have talent in players like Antonio Brown and Le’veon Bell but rarely perform to their potential, either in coaching or strategy
