Having considered the AFC game yesterday, we now turn our attention to the NFC Conference game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Seattle Seahawks, a huge rivalry and marquee match up between possibly the two best teams in the NFL

The San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks were preseason favourites to reach the Super Bowl this season.

Both San Francisco and Seattle are led by young and versatile quarterbacks that can get it done both on ground and through the air. The 49ers have Colin Kaepernick, who totaled 423 passing yards, 113 rushing yards in two games in this postseason while the Seahawks are led by Russell Wilson, who had 3,357 passing yards and 539 rushing yards in 16 games in the regular season.

While the attention will be on the quarterbacks , thekey to the game will  be on their respective team’s defenses. Seattle is no. 1 in the league in pass defense (172.0 opponents’ yards per game) and 7th in rush defense (101.6) while San Francisco is 7th (221.0) and 4th in rush defense (95.9).

These teams also rank no. 1 and no. 3 in total scoring defense; The Seahawks limit opposition to 14.4 points per game and the 49ers to 17.0 points per outing.

Seattle running back Marshawn Lynch leads the team in total rushing yards (1,275) and was key in the Seahawks’ divisional round win over the New Orleans Saints with 140 yards and two touchdowns.

The 49ers somewhat contained Lynch in the teams’ last meeting limiting him to just 72 rushing yards with San Francisco gutting out the 19-17 win in Week 14. The 49ers and Seahawks split their season series this year as the Seahawks got the win in Week 2 with a 29-3 blowout.

This will be a very close hard fought game between huge rivals. Of course it is long recognised that Seattle have a big home advantage at QWest field that here the 49ers have to overcome but the conditions are in place for them to do so.

Kaepernick has got hot in the play-offs and unlike the earlier meetings between the two sides, has weapons back on offense. Wilson for Seattle meanwhile has not been in the form of early season, those problems slightly masked by the continued stellar performance of the defense. The team’s offense haven’t scored more than 27 points in any of their last five games. During that time, Russell Wilson has surpassed the 200-yard mark just once.

I would be highly surprised to see the game have more than one score in this either way. Seattle are posted as 3.5 point favourites. Adjusting for home bias in the spread, the game is viewed as a virtual pick’em. I think the 49ers at 6/4 outright (Ladbrokes) is appealing. I think they are the more rounded team, are hot at the right time and could pull off the upset
