Newcastle United square up to Liverpool on Sunday in a mouthwatering encounter. Champions League football looks a forlorn hope already for the Reds, but the Magpies are still right in the hunt to qualify. This fixture has provided plenty of memorable moments down the years, but what is in store this time?

Newcastle United Win 12/5 (@ BetVictor)

Alan Pardew and Kenny Dalglish are at opposing ends of the managerial spectrum right now, and few would have predicted that when they took over at their respective clubs. Pardew has taken the Magpies right into the thick of a battle for Champions League football, while Dalglish has overseen some hefty signings, but a rather underwhelming season on the pitch.

With the two clubs apparently heading in different directions, finding Liverpool favourites in the betting market might well cause a few brows to furrow. Seeing them as short as 5/4 however, will have punters rubbing their eyes in disbelief.

With the visitors too short, the price about the hosts is obviously tempting. 12/5 on a team who have scored in 13 of their last 14 games, and won 8 of 15 home games, looks terrific value. Newcastle remember, sit above Liverpool in the table, and are 12 points better off. The Merseysider’s have some respectable road form, but they have been beaten 8 times from 15, which again makes the odds on a home win look extremely generous.

Back to back defeats for Liverpool have not suddenly changed them into a shambles, but Champions League qualification is out of the question, and the FA Cup final with Everton is now the only viable way King Kenny can salvage the season.

The price on Newcastle looks way too big. Liverpool have lost some of their defensive strength of late, and the Magpies have been irresistible going forward. 12/5 (BetVictor) is most certainly solid value.
