Bookmakers have reacted to Australia’s thrilling 25-20 Tri Nations victory over Rugby World Cup favourites New Zealand, by pushing the All Blacks out to a best price of 1.62, though clued up punters can currently obtain 1.73 on Betfair, the world’s largest betting exchange.
New Zealand found themselves 17 points down to the Wallabies, but managed to level things, before Kurtley Beale sealed victory for the Australians, their first in the Tri Nations series since 2001.
Coach Robbie Deans played the victory down, stating: “It’s obviously a significant result for us as we haven’t won the Tri Nations since 2001 – that’s a biggie. In terms of the World Cup it’s irrelevant.”
The bookmakers disagree though, as they have clipped Australia to no bigger than 5.00 (bwin) for World Cup glory in 2011, while New Zealand were pushed out to 1.62.
William Hill are offering a host of Rugby World Cup specials, including a best price of 2.50 about an Australia vs New Zealand final, and spokesman Rupert Adams said: “We thought that a full strength All Black side was unbeatable, but now their air of invincibility has been removed, a number of teams will feel they have a chance.”
One of those sides are England, who beat Ireland 20-9 on Saturday in their final warm up game ahead of the 2011 World Cup. The 2003 winners and 2007 runners up can are priced up as short as 11.00 with the likes of bwin, but SportingBet go a stand out 19.00 about the Three Lions.
Ireland on the other hand, are as big as 41.00 with Paddy Power, who are showing a distinct lack of patriotism in a bid to increase their Rugby World Cup business.
