The first round of this year’s French Open is bound to bring a couple of surprising results and Monica Puig, who is among the most talented players on the WTA tour right now, might indeed be able to upset Nadia Petrova, the world’s number eleven, on Sunday.

It is almost impossible to find a fan who wouldn’t like Monica Puig, the young Puerto Rican that is currently ranked as the world’s number eighty-five. This year seems to be her breakthrough year and she has been playing fairly impressive tennis in recent months, beating players like Julia Goerges or Francesca Schiavone in Oeiras and taking sets off the likes of Venus Williams and Lucie Safarova elsewhere.

The draw has not been that kind to her in Paris, but she is one of those ladies that love challenges and there is no doubt that she will come out swinging. After all, that is what she does best – and, when on fire, she can play free-flowing tennis that can trouble even someone as experienced as Nadia Petrova. She has nothing to lose, which is yet another factor that should speak in her favour, as she sometimes tends to be quite nervous in matches that she is expected to win without any problems.

The number one reason for this bet, however, is the fact that the Russian has gone off the boil a little bit in recent weeks. She is still the better player of the two, of course, but her confidence must be fairly low after the two tough losses against Svetlana Kuznetsova and Carla Suarez-Navarro. There should therefore be a slight window of opportunity for Puig to take advantage of and the odds, which are slightly above 3.00, therefore look worth taking, especially considering that the rest of the Sunday’s schedule looks rather bland.
