After a weekend where 7 out of 9 Premier League selections Betpal gave were winners, the first weekend of the new season concludes tonight with Manchester City against Newcastle United, Live on Sky Sports

Recommendation

Over 3.5 Goals in the match 6/4 @ SkyBet

Manuel Pellegrini’s first game in charge of title challengers Manchester City sees them take on strugglers from last year Newcastle United, live on Sky Sports at 8pm tonight. City are prohibitive favourites to win with the bookmakers, 1/3, and its not difficult to see why.

Adding to the team that finished second last year are the likes of summer signings Fernandinho, Jesus Navas, Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic to give City one of the deepest and most talented player pools in the League. This attacking flair adds on to a defence that only conceded 34 goals in 38 games last season and comes back, minus the injury to Nastasic, unchanged.

It’s not difficult to see Manchester City as favourites to win the title this season. The Hart-Kompany-Yaya Toure spine of the team will be as strong as ever and there are signs of a new approach, with Pellegrini on record as wanting to attack, score goals and win with style.

This is a change from the rather pragmatic approach adopted under Mancini, where the side went into cruise mode on taking the lead and won a lot of games 1-0 and 2-0, and overall they kept 18 clean sheets.

For Newcastle United, this is of course a vital season for Alan Pardew after the severe disappointments of last term where, ravaged by injury and the sale of Ba to Chelsea, the team was looking over its shoulder for  much of the second half of the season.

Newcastle have talent in Cabaye, Ben Arfa and Cisse, to be bolstered by the arrival of the exciting Loic Remy on a  season’s loan from QPR but its diifficult to see them withstanding the barrage from Manchester City tonight.

Looking for value, as repeatedly said I try to avoid short odds on shots and look for an alternative. One such appears to me to be in the goals market, typically at over 2.5 goals in the match but again, 4/7 best does not appeal. Instead I’ll take a view that a Pellegrini team will attack, that the City front six will outclass the United back five and that Newcastle have enough attacking talent themselves to create some chances and look at over 3.5 goals in the match at 6/4 with SkyBet.

The proof will be in the pudding tonight. If City go ahead and sit back, we’ll be no good, but the signs are that they won’t. I prefer the goals market to first goal-scorer markets for this match as, it being a new manager’s first competitive game, its difficult to ascertain the starting line-up in the attacking positions such are the range of options Pellegrini has available to him
