Even if they were to win all the remaining games, the Padres would probably still miss the playoff, as the gap they are trying to close is extremely wide. For the time being they take solace in the fact that they play spoiler again by crushing the hopes of those teams that are involved in the wildcard race. Tonight, it is time for Arizona to try and win a series against the surging Padres but they will have to fight hard for it.

Match: Arizona Diamondbacks vs San Diego Padres

Bet: San Diego Padres

Odds: bet365 2.65

With Eric Stults on the mound, the visitors don’t even need to keep up the high production of runs, because this starting pitcher is good enough to win with fewer points scored. He conceded an average of only three runs per match, but it should be noted that most of the times he played as a reliever and pitched for just one or two runs. This is why the bookmakers are reluctant to give the visitors the favorite status or at least present more balanced odds, but we shouldn’t be surprised if Stults walks the distance tonight.

Every run scored weighs heavily

Under normal conditions the Diamondbacks would be more than content to give the ball to one of their most promising players, as Patrick Corbin is shinning bright this summer. He has an ERA or only 3.60 which means that even if his teammates don’t turn the game into a scoring festival he can still carry them to a win. This is what recently happened as Arizona won the last two games despite the fact that the batting squad was very discrete, but Patrick knows better than to relax prematurely.

Out of nine decisions he won just five and the Padres he is facing tonight are a horse of a different color, compared to what San Diego used to be. While their pitching remains as solid as ever, the offensive has suddenly come back to life and Corbin will have it difficult to pitch deep into the game. Five or six innings are not enough to give the hosts the upper hand, especially with Upton uncertain and Kubel not very effective against Stults.

BetPal Tip:

Rowing against the current is not a wise thing to do most of the time, but tonight it is a good choice to back the underdogs, given the generosity of Bet365. Not too often we stumble upon odds of 2.65 for a team that won five consecutive games and scored 28 runs over that span.
