There have been no massive upsets in the French Open so far and, although that may very well change in the next couple of days, most matches are undoubtedly going to be won by the favourites.

Marcos Baghdatis, the world’s number fifty-nine, was actually seen as the underdog in his first round match against Ivo Karlovic, but he outplayed the Croat in three sets and is now certainly the favourite against Damir Dzumhur, who got a bit lucky against Mikhail Youzhny on Sunday. Just a few months ago, he seemed destined for a fairly quick rise through the rankings, but he’s failed to take his game to the next level once the European clay court swing rolled around, losing against guys like Veic, Rublev, and Beck.

Many were then expecting him to beat Jurgen Melzer in Geneva after his successful run in the qualification rounds, but that win did not surface either and it is now rather hard to say what his chances of breaking into the top 50 are. Marcos Baghdatis has not played a lot of matches in recent times, but that does not mean a great deal, as he looked very solid in his match against Thomaz Bellucci in Geneva and it is also impossible to say anything negative about his performance against Ivo Karlovic.

Therefore, we believe that there is value in backing him to defeat Dzumhur in the second round of the French Open. The gap between him and the world’s elite might be getting bigger and bigger, but guys like Damir Dzumhur will remain well within his reach for many months to come, especially in these bigger tournaments in which being experienced counts for a lot.
