The Lower League Value Hunt returns this weekend with a trip to the home of the “Crooked Spire” – Chesterfield. The Spireites have a trip to Wembley to look forward to later in the month, but this weekend they’ll be fighting for their League One lives as they play host to Tranmere Rovers. Despite their position at the foot of the table, we think they’re hugely over priced.

BetVictor are offering a rather generous 2.70 about Chesterfield this weekend, a price which I would find insulting were I a supporter of the Derbyshire team. Okay, so they were soundly beaten 4-0 by League One leaders in their last match and they lost 1-0 the game before, a difficult tie away at Notts County who were under a new management team that have rejuvenated the Magpies.

But the Tranmere game represents a brilliant opportunity to bounce back to the sort of form that Chesterfield were enjoying prior to those two tricky ties. They recently beat third placed Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 on home soil, were very unlucky not to leave Bury with all three points, denied as they were by an 88th minute leveller, and the Spireites also held off Bournemouth – a side with one of the best away records in the league – at the B2net Stadium, also by a goal to nil.

Tranmere on the other hand, have been having a torrid time in League One of late. Yet to win a game in 2012, Rovers have picked up a meagre five points in their ten matches since the turn of the year, with just one of those coming on their travels. In recent weeks, they have lost against lowly Yeovil, Wycombe and Oldham (all away from home), as well as failing to beat relegation strugglers Rochdale on home soil.

So considering Tranmere’s torrid away form and particularly poor record against sides from the lower half of League One, I really can’t see how anyone can have Chesterfield at such a huge price as that on offer at BetVictor. This reeks of value – get on.
