The next few days will see players getting into the right frame of mind before the start of the next Grand Slam, so a few surprising results here and there are certainly to be expected in the cities of Eastbourne and Hertogenbosch.

Dominika Cibulkova, the world’s number eighteen, definitely belongs to a group of players that might lose much earlier than many would expect them to. Of course, the Slovak has always done reasonably well on grass courts and there is no doubt that she would love to replicate some of her past results over the next week or two, but the signs of her doing well are simply not there at the moment.

First of all, there are all the bad results from the clay court part of the season. Secondly, there is the underlying reason of all those bad results – namely, there are her fairly serious health problems that are currently forcing her to play through pain. She decided to skip the last week and get some treatment, but the latest news are not very promising either and her status for the Grand Slam is still very much in doubt.

She should be fairly happy about the draw, as she will get to play against a clay court specialist in Lourdes Dominguez-Lino, but health concerns usually take precedence over match-up advantages and this is a price that should appeal to all punters that would like to bet on Cibulkova not being in a good shape just yet. And, with a retirement being a possibility as well, it is also important to consider which bookmaker to choose – giving up on a bit of value might indeed be preferable on this particular occasion.
