Juanda Beats Hellmuth In WSOP Epic

John Juanda has won the No Limit 2-7 Draw Lowball Championship at this year’s World Series of Poker, conquering an unbelievably strong final table to earn his fifth WSOP bracelet. For all the latest WSOP 2011 news, read on.

WSOP Event #16 – $10,000 No Limit 2-7 Draw Lowball Championship
John Juanda added a fifth gold WSOP bracelet to his collection, taking his total live tournament earnings through the $10 million mark, as he beat Phill Hellmuth – who has 11 WSOP bracelets of his own to boast about – heads up at a tough 2-7 Draw Lowball Championship final table.

The day began with nine of the world’s best poker players remaining. Hellmuth’s record speaks for itself, while the only player of those nine without a bracelet was Joe Cassidy, who has been cashing regularly at the WSOP since 2004. Juanda, Steve Sung, Richard Ashby, Nick Schulman, Hasan Habib, Greg Raymer and David Baker – who was defending his title – were the other seven returning players, while Johnny Chan came 12th and Bertrand Grospellier came 11th – this was an incredibly tough tournament.

As if emerging from such a stacked field weren’t enough, Juanda found himself down around two to one in chips at the heads up stage, against the man with more WSOP bracelets than anyone else in history. Two of the best poker players in the world, with totally contrasting styles and images, fighting it out for a WSOP Championship for over three hours – this truly was one of the greatest matches in the history of the World Series.

In addition to the bracelet, Juanda picks up $367,170 in prize money, while Hellmuth takes home $226,907. Britain’s Richard Ashby finished third, for a $143,833 score.

Juanda has an excellent pedigree in lowball poker games, having finished fourth in the 2-7 Championship event back in 2009 and 2010, as well as another fourth place in 2009′s $2,500 2-7 Triple Draw event, while his first ever WSOP win came back in 2002, at Fixed Limit A-5 Triple Draw.

Daniel Negreanu tweeted during the contest: “Juanda is the best all around 2-7 player I’ve ever played with, especially in tournaments. He reads people very well.”

Juanda is the first repeat bracelet winner at this year’s WSOP.

WSOP Event #15 – $1,500 Pot Limit Hold’em
The Epic 2-7 event was not the only tournament to conclude on day 12 of the 42nd annual World Series of Poker. Brian Rast took down the $1,500 Pot Limit Hold’em tournament, beating Allen Kessler heads up.

Rast, who collects $227,232 for his efforts, emerged victorious from the ten players that returned for the third day of the tournament, though 765 had initially bought into the event, including star names such as Liv Boeree, Jeff Madsen, Kathy Liebert and Tom “durrr” Dwan.

Despite those number, Rast himself almost failed to buy into the event that he would later winning. Close friend and fellow poker pro Antonio Esfandiari persuaded him to take part and the rest, as they say, is history.

WSOP Event #17 – $1,500 HORSE
Day two of the HORSE tournament began with 185 players and ended with just 17, of which Adam Friedman is the chip leader. Also remaining in the field are Victor Ramdin, Denis Ethier and David Baker, all of whom are chasing a share of the $1,300,050 prize pool.

Friedman is yet to score a WSOP bracelet, though he did cash in the WSOP Main Event of 2005, for $235,390.

Play resumes tomorrow and officials are hopeful of wrapping things up, though the new WSOP rule of no more than ten levels of poker per day could see this one head to a fourth day.

$289,283 is set aside for the eventual champion, with all remaining players guaranteed a pay out of $7,709.

WSOP Event #18 – $1,500 No Limit Hold’em
The first of two WSOP events to kick off yesterday, Event #18 is another $1,500 No Limit Hold’em tournament, that saw 3,157 entrants, creating a prize fund of $4,261,950, a healthy $735,400 of which is reserved for the winner.

Before the 42nd annual World Series of Poker kicked off, there was much doom and gloom being peddled with “Black Friday” still fresh in the mind, about how numbers would be down at this year’s WSOP. Phil Ivey’s absence only fuelled the flames, but many events have so far proven the predictions wrong.

This particular tournament blew those predictions apart, given that the 3,157 participants made for the largest ever field in a $1,500 buy in tournament at the WSOP, with 324 players being paid out. The tournament’s first day saw players being eliminated at a rate of five per minute and all players making the final table are guaranteed to pocket $54,936.

Leading the field after the first day’s poker is Kenny Nguyen, who is yet to secure a cash at the World Series of Poker. He has a slender lead over Jon Lane, with Stewart Stone in third.

Among the more notable poker names left in the field are Erick Lindgren, Jean-Robert Bellande, Scott Seiver, Erica Schoenberg and Vitaly Lunkin. The likes of David Benyamine, Michael Mizrachi, Joe Cada and Jason Mercier all bust out on the first day.

Day two kicks off tomorrow and 490 players will be returning to do battle for WSOP gold.

WSOP Event #19 – $2,500 Six Handed Fixed Limit Hold’em
354 coughed up the $2,500 buy in to take part in the third Fixed Limit Hold’em event of the 2011 WSOP, with 130 of those surviving to the second day, where Shannon Shorr tops the chips counts.

Shorr has 6 WPT cashes, one EPT cash and a total of 18 cashes at the World Series of Poker, but is yet to secure a bracelet.

Also remaining in the hunt for the $213,431 in first place prize money are Isaac Haxton, Daniel Alaei, David Benyamine, JC Tran and Sorel Mizzi.

Tomorrow’s highlight will be the beginning of the Seven Card Stud Championship. Stay tuned for all the latest 2011 World Series of Poker updates!
