Saturday night’s Wimbledon greyhound racing centres around the two semi-finals of the 2013 Greyhound Derby, which we have previewed here, but the card, live on Sky Sports also features some other quality racing with the heats of both the Derby Plate and the Champion Hurdle for greyhound racing fans to enjoy. We have had a look at the three heats of the Derby Plate and have recommendations in each of the races, including our best bet at 7/1 with Paddy Power for a dog who has the early pace to grab a surprise win.

The Derby Plate is a competition for dogs who competed in the Greyhound Derby but were eliminated in the early rounds and is a great opportunity for the dogs to boost their profile by earning a spot in a high-profile race on Derby Final Night. There are three heats with the top two dogs from each heat progressing to the final.

The first heat of the Derby Plate, and thus our first free greyhound racing betting tip, runs at 7:10pm, and we have a slight preference for Cloheena Micky at 9/2 with Paddy Power.

Cloheena Micky ran extremely well, and above expectation, in the Derby itself and I think it can continue that good form by making all to win this opening heat.

It has clearly the best early pace in the race, assuming King Nicky doesn’t find his trapping boots, and I hope enough early to make up for the slightly unfavourable draw in trap 4. Cloheena Micky should be able to lead and doesn’t look the sort to be pulled back in this race.

The favourite comes from trap 1, in the shape of Barrie Draper’s Glenpadden Post, but is far too unreliable to back and trap 1 can be seen as a negative too. I imagine a poor break from the favourite which should give Benkaat Nero a nice run on the inside and he will be the main danger to the selection but I reckon Micky can just hold Nero off.

The second heat of the Derby Plate is at 7:25pm and sees us take a chance on a bit of an outsider who we reckon is overpriced and can cause the upset. As such, we’ve made it our best bet of the Derby Plate heats.

Farkland Tyson shocked everyone by winning in the opening round of the Derby at a huge 25/1 and can do so again this heat of the Derby Plate at 7/1 with Paddy Power.

Tyson can show exceptional early at times and that is what we are banking on in this race as he can come away from trap one and blow the competition away – a sectional of 4:74s in the Derby first round is superbly fast.

There is other early pace in the race but both Any Dak and Millwards Matt are wide seeds who have been given awkward middle trap drawings and a chance is taken that they don’t show as good early as they would from preferred traps.

We will know our fate quite early with this one but at 7/1 it is well worth the chance. Also, given that we think he wins this heat, which then gives him a slot in the Derby Plate Final, we must also get involved in his chances in the outright market for small stakes as William Hill are a stand-out 25/1 about his chances.

The third, and final, heat of the Derby Plate, is at 7:40pm and we have selected Trewmount Snap from trap 6 to cause a minor upset and defeat competition favourite Castlelyons Cofi.

Trewmount Snap tends to run Wimbledon well, as demonstrated in the opening round of the Derby and whilst an inconsistent sort, we take a chance that he can use his decent all round speed to take the victory at the 7/2 on offer at William Hill.
